Hours of station data are missing. No counting NotSpots today! We checked. It’s not the O’Brien Map engine. London, other Bixi systems reporting just fine.

This started last week, but the interruptions were mere hiccups compared to this.

Men Are From Midtown, Women Are From Brooklyn

But Citi Bike -- which turns one this month -- could be starting to close the gender gap. One recent study found that the female share of cyclists in the city is 23.6 percent -- but the female share of Citi Bike cyclists is 31.1 percent. In Boston, 47 percent of bike share subscribers are women. In D.C., that number is 54 percent.

When Citi Bike becomes a hassle, consider the alternative: 60,000 stolen every year

New York is a notoriously crummy place to lock a bike. Estimates vary, but the best guess is that at least 60,000 bikes are stolen in the city every year, with only about 2 percent of them being recovered by the owners.

In 2012, filmmaker Casey Neistat repeatedly stole his own bike from various locations in Manhattan using a variety of implements, including a crowbar and a hacksaw. He didn't really attract any attention until he used a power tool to remove the bike from a subway entrance in the middle of Union Square in the daytime (the cops let him go when he explained the stunt).

The station in bold was rebalanced. The four in italics went empty sometime during the day.

Our point here is that the NotSpot issue at many stations is chronic in nature: They empty or fill at roughly the same times several days a week. And they suffer from inattention by the system operators.
