Friday evening summary

  • That Tompkins Square station we’ve harped about --  Avenue D & E 12 St -- is still bikeless. Something’s gotta be broken. Going on 30 hours.
  • Church & Leonard in Tribeca has gone out of service. A Citi Bike tweet said it will be down for about 10 days due to construction.
  • Fulton St & Clermont Ave in Fort Greene, came off the out-of service list. But at this writing it has no bikes.

Friday morning report

The stations along and west of Broadway around 53 st. are going bikeless as often as not this morning. Maybe some Super Bowl madness.

The macro numbers point to an unexceptional morning but there’s some scattered ugliness.
In Manhattan, Avenue D & E 12 St has been without a bike for 22 hours. In Brooklyn, 10 hours for Fulton St & Clermont Ave

Text your location to 516 204 4668

Then deliver yourself to a station.
Really. That’s all you need to do.
When you come across that NotSpot, we’ve found it easier to type the locale, e.g Union Square or 110 Broadway, and get a text response than it is to fiddle with the

on the official map.

Diagnosis: Lower East has NotStop Syndrome

It's almost chronic the way the Lower East Side purges itself of bikes every day around noon.

At midday, more than 60 percent of the total number of docks in the Lower East Side and Tompkins Square were waiting for a bike to fill their empty arms.

This part of town is usually bike deprived at this time of day but today is really, really bad.

Brooklyn: Where time must not mean money

We wonder why, on a frigid but otherwise unremarkable day, it took more than 22 hours to get Brooklyn’s Clinton St & Tillary St station back to doing what it’s supposed to do.

All told, the five Brooklyn NotSpots that were down at midday took an average of 10 hours to serve up a bike again.

Brooklyn’s service really got hammered by the Jan 21-22 snowstorm. The Washington Ave & Greene Ave station in Clinton Hill, which is No. 1 on this week’s list, was empty for 93 hours. Clinton Hill had not previously made the list.
In Manhattan, Tompkins Square turned in the worst performance. It too is making its debut on the list.

Of note

  • We haven’t come across any story that sheds light on exactly how the Bixi bankruptcy might impact New York’s bike-sharing program.  Here’s the story from Forbes magazine.

  • We’re suffering the most out-of-service stations since the New Year’s closures around Times Square -- seven out of commission at this writing. In the Garment District, four Broadway stations --  at W 36, W 37, W 39 and W 41 Sts -- were pulled from service starting Thursday and continuing. Near Union Square, Greenwich Village’s  W 13 St & 5 Ave station remains closed because of the water main break.  The Village also lost Sullivan St & Washington Sq for a time on Thursday. Two Bridges lost the Catherine St & Monroe St station for several days. The Fulton St &  Rockwell Pl station in Fort Greene was shut down starting Monday.

Bicycles available

This week we recorded a new low.
Most recorded: 5658 on Sunday 1/19 at 10 am (Record is 5674)
Fewest recorded: 3874 at 5:30 pm Friday.  That’s the record low.

How to read the charts

What’s a NotSpot? A NotSpot is a bike-sharing station that is empty or filled at the time we conduct a survey.

What’s a survey? A survey is when we peruse the data provided by the official map and the data provided by a map produced by the Center for Advanced Spatial Analysis. We conduct two surveys daily, Monday through Friday. We do not survey on weekends.

About the rankings:  We rank the Top Ten NotSpots by neighborhood. We take the total NotSpot hours produced by all stations in the ‘hood and divide that by the total number of docks there. The "hours per dock" is as close as we can get to a common denominator.
